Maternal Health
I have forcefully and strategically advocated for policies to directly address this terrible trend. I’ve shared my personal experiences to highlight the challenges and fears women face when giving birth in Georgia and demanded action from the Republican-led legislature. I’ve served on the Democratic Caucus Maternal Mortality Committee and helped organize a public hearing to identify and advocate policy solutions.
Georgia’s maternal mortality rate is “among the worst in the nation,” with Black women having twice the mortality rate compared to White women.
I co-sponsored House Bill 38, which would fully expand Medicaid in Georgia. Full Medicaid expansion would automatically provide healthcare coverage to all low-income adults, including pregnant women and new mothers, and would eliminate the need for unwinding.
I supported increased funding for Medicaid eligibility caseworkers in the state budget to help process redetermination cases due to the Public Health Emergency expiration.
Georgia is one of 10 states in the US that have refused the Affordable Care Act’s Medicaid Expansion. I have fought for Medicaid expansion in Georgia, which would provide healthcare coverage to many low-income women and improve maternal health outcomes.
I’ve spoken out against restrictions on women's access to critical healthcare, such as abortion, which can negatively impact maternal health and well-being.
