Georgia Republicans could redraw maps, limit governor’s powers after election

State GOP leaders have not said if they plan to have a special session. But Democrats are already preparing for one.

The AJC reports state GOP leaders may pursue a post-election special session to redraw maps, raising concerns for Rep. Draper and voting rights advocates.

According to The Atlanta Journal-Constitution, state Republican leaders are considering a post-election special legislative session to redraw congressional boundaries and potentially curb executive power. For communities across South DeKalb and Clayton County, another redistricting push threatens fair representation and could dismantle majority-Black voting districts.

Democrats are already preparing for a fight, warning that any postelection power grab would defy the will of the voters.

State Rep. Saira Draper, D-Atlanta, invoked Kemp’s refusal to help President Donald Trump overturn his 2020 defeat in Georgia.

“Redrawing maps and stripping power from newly elected leaders after an election isn’t governing. It’s refusing to accept the result,” she said.

“Gov. Kemp famously stood up to Trump in 2020 for refusing to accept the choice of Georgia voters,” she added. “It would be a shame for him to go out a hypocrite.”

Information about the upcoming Elections

The November 3, 2026 elections will be critical for Georgia’s future. Review the Democrats running for statewide office, and remember to vote all the way down your ballot. Supporting the statewide candidates AND your local representatives is crucial. Flipping a chamber would allow us to pass meaningful legislation that helps hardworking Georgians. It would also allow us to push back against likely efforts to redraw maps this December.

What you can do now

  • Confirm your voter registration and make any necessary updates by October 5.
  • Make a plan to vote—and encourage your friends and family to do the same. I strongly recommend voting early in person if possible. Early voting offers flexibility (you may vote at any early voting site in your county), helps avoid long lines, provides time to resolve issues, and reduces the risk of encountering disruptions at your polling place.
  • There is good additional voting guidance at the Democratic Party of Georgia website.
  • Voters with disabilities can find excellent information on voting rights, accessibility tools, and available resources at REV UP Georgia.
